AUDIO SYNCHRONIZATION

Many times, attorneys ask us if we're "taping" the proceedings as well as recording them stenographically.  While some reporters still use cassette tape records as a backup, most court reporting software today has a feature called "audio synchronization."  A voice print, or recording of the audio, is made right on the reporter's laptop as they write.  If the reporter wants to double-check a word or phrase, it's quite easy to do.

So why wouldn't a reporter taken full advantage of every available technology to make a better record?

Audio synchronization is a tool, not a crutch.  A skilled reporter maintains control of the proceedings and is hands-on recording every word.  In realtime, you're watching the record being created and recorded right in front of your eyes!

Audio sync is a wonderful tool to assist the reporter in producing a "true, correct and full" transcript; however, audio sync is NOT voice recognition.  Using hanging-mic voice recognition for litigation work is not in the near future.  As a matter of fact, you may want to read what Bill Gates has said since 1997 about about hanging-mic voice recognition:

Did you know that most court reporting software has the option of making a voice print right on the reporter's laptop as they write?
